School of Art, Design and Fashion

Built in 1987 as the Department of Art and Design, the School of Art, Design and Fashion is one of the most unique and most creative schools at XMUT. We have five programs: Fashion Design, Product Design, Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design, and Fashion Design & Performance. We also boast the Theory and Foundation Section, the Center for Instruction, Laboratory and Internship, Fashion Institute, the Institute for Industrial Product Design, and the Traditional Chinese Painting Institute.

We run an open multi-channel, multi-level, and multi-disciplinary teaching and learning system for integrated development, as we strive to grow into an institution with an eye on prosperity both globally and locally. The school has a young and dynamic faculty, 37% of which is made up of professors and associate professors. Around 92% of the faculty are master and/or doctorate degree holders. There are well-established designers and artists honored with many awards in international, national or local design contests or art shows, and there are experts who have served important roles in a number of academic or evaluating institutions.

In our school, learning is often practiced in a ‘class-company” style in which students design and model a virtual company and fulfill their learning assignments just as employees work in a real company. The situational learning and teaching creates full student-teacher and student-student interaction and the gap between classroom learning and real world demand is effectively narrowed.

We are currently undertaking educational exchanges and cooperation with corresponding institutions from elite universities in and outside of China. We have established cooperative relationships with a number of universities and are currently negotiating with others. They include Tsinghua University, Hunan University, Donghua University, University of Regina in Canada, Ulsan University and Sookmyung Women's University in Korea, and Ming Chuan University in Taiwan. We have renowned professors, famous designers and artists come to work as our visiting professors whose regular seminars at our school broaden the vision of our students and teachers and expand their knowledge about design and the world.

We have regular academic exchanges and study tours with universities and businesses in Taiwan so that we get the latest cutting-edge information about the design industry and students have expanded vision about design development worldwide. We also have close relationships with local industries within our own pro-industry approach in order to nurture quality and creative design graduates who are awareof the changing needs from economic development to local industry. We have internship arrangements with elite businesses such as Xiamen Tiannuo Design & Consultant, TUTTI Exhibition Service, Xiamen Wanli Stone Group, Xiamen Solux Industries, and TCL. Our labs and training bases, on and offcampus alike, are managed with modern design concepts and methods at home and overseas.

The School of Art, Design and Fashion values our favorable Haixi-based location and close relationship with local enterprises, and we learn from the latest Chinese and overseas concepts for design education to develop a unique and creative approach of our own to nurture innovative and capable people for design-related careers. We have internship arrangements with elite businesses such as Xiamen Tiannuo Design and Consultant, TUTTI Exhibition Service, Xiamen JOYA Design, TCL, SWSPORT, and ANTA, and co-sponsor the provincial Outstanding Engineers Training Program with famous business partners of Fengfei Apparel and Accessory and Jiwenbo Fashion Agency.

Graduates in 2013 enjoyed a 100% employment rate and many of them were employed by renowned companies in China and well recognised for their quality work.
